Preparing soil for planting is more than just turning the earth. It’s about creating the right environment for crops to thrive. This year, we took a more precise approach to tunnel prep by using soil testing to guide our organic amendments and tilling methods. The goal is to build healthier soil that supports stronger, more productive plants.
Using Soil Testing to Guide Amendments
Each season, we adjust our soil prep based on what we observe and learn. This year, we finally had soil testing done to understand nutrient levels and soil composition better. The results showed some nutrient buildup near the surface, which means we needed to mix amendments deeper into the soil.
With this information, we selected organic amendments tailored to our soil’s needs. Instead of guessing, we applied the right amounts of compost, rock dust, and other natural inputs. This targeted approach helps avoid over-application and supports balanced soil nutrition.

Deep Tilling to Incorporate Nutrients
Because nutrients had accumulated near the surface, we performed a one-time deep tilling to mix everything thoroughly. Deep tilling breaks up compacted layers and helps organic matter reach deeper soil levels where roots grow.
However, deep tilling can create a compacted layer just below the tilling depth, known as a “plow pan.” To prevent this, we follow up with a broadfork, which loosens the soil without disturbing its structure too much. This step improves aeration and drainage, making the beds ready for root crops like carrots.

Final Smoothing with a Power Harrow
Before planting, we make one last pass with a power harrow. This machine smooths and levels the bed tops, creating an even surface for planting seeds or seedlings. A smooth bed helps with water distribution and makes planting easier and more precise.
The combination of soil testing, deep tilling, broadfork loosening, and power harrowing may seem like many steps. But each one plays a role in building soil that supports healthy crops and reduces problems like poor root growth or uneven nutrient uptake.

Building Soil Health for Better Crops
This year’s tunnel prep shows how careful soil management can improve planting success. By understanding soil needs through testing and using thoughtful tilling techniques, we create a foundation for strong, healthy plants.
